At the end of June, Kellogg announced a recall of over 28 million boxes of cereal due to the fact that the company found that the liner can produce a waxy taste and smell in the cereal.
Reportedly the Kellogg company destroyed multiple boxes of defective products that showed that the taste and smell were a result of chemical 2-methylnaphthalene before announcing the recall. This chemical has be known to be associated with lung injuries in adults.
The Subcommittee of Oversight and Investigation is asking for a meeting with Kellogg to address the issue and discuss the company’s activities and how they plan to prevent chemicals from entering the cereal. The committee has asked Kellogg to have relevant information ready by August 16,2010.
