Authorities investigating Florida fatal crashes

Posted on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 8:35 pm

Authorities are still looking into several reasons for why 19 motor vehicles were involved in car accidents around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday morning near Gainesville, Florida. The accidents occurred on Interstate 75 after heavy smoke and fog caused poor visibility on the roadways.

A wildfire directly off of the highway is responsible for the smoke in the area, and officials believe that this fire may have been set on purpose. There was a large amount of fog in the area already, and when added to the smoke, it created horrible driving conditions.

People involved in the collisions compared the accident scene to the end of the world. Things were chaotic and people were unable to see or locate people around them. In total, 11 people were killed in the collisions and another 18  people were taken to hospitals after sustaining injuries.

The investigation into the reasons behind the fatal crashes is still ongoing, as officials are looking into all possible options for the accidents.
